What is the main purpose of installing a high-high drum pressure interlock in a boiler? To protect which equipment?
It primarily protects various pressure-bearing and heat-exposing surfaces within the boiler’s steam-water system, as well as the steam-water manifolds and internal piping, preventing these components from being damaged due to excessive pressure. It also safeguards the heat-exposing surfaces of the superheater against the risk of dry burning. For example, if the steam pipes connecting the boiler drum to the superheater or the desuperheaters become blocked for some reason – such as when the inner tube of a desuperheater comes loose – the steam flowing through the superheater’s heat-exposing surfaces will be insufficient, causing the superheater to overheat and get damaged. This type of protection helps to prevent such situations. Of course, it also includes overpressure protection for equipment that uses steam.
