In diesel and gasoline hydrogenation units, how can the cetane number of the products be ensured to be within acceptable limits during normal production? Is it also adjusted by regulating the stripping steam, furnace outlet temperature, reflux rate, etc.? Please give your advice
The cetane number of diesel is determined by the raw materials and the conditions of the hydrogenation reaction, and it generally has little relation to the distillation process.
In the cetane number of the raw materials, that of straight wood chips is high while that of processed wood chips is low; by adjusting the ratio of these raw materials, it is possible to adjust the cetane number of the final product. Additionally, the operating conditions such as temperature and pressure can be altered to crack large molecules like naphthenes and aromatics into straight-chain structures, thereby increasing the cetane number; attention should be paid to the diesel yield when raising the temperature. Generally, the method you mentioned is used only to adjust the dry point of gasoline, while the cetane number and distillation have little impact. Additionally, the cetane number is used to measure the anti-knock properties of diesel, while the octane number is used for gasoline.

In pure hydrogenation, the proportion of raw materials remains fixed, so the cetane number stays constant; it is hydrocracking that increases the cetane number, while the distillation system has no effect on the cetane number. . .
