Can the chromatography carrier gas be changed from hydrogen to helium?
This question should fall under the specialty of chemical industry analysis. Personally, I think it’s not possible. This is because the working principle of a chromatograph is to obtain analysis results by measuring the electrical conductivity of the flame generated when a mixture of the sample and carrier gas burns, and helium cannot burn. However, I’m not sure if there are any special analytical requirements that dictate the use of helium.
It depends on whether the gas medium being analyzed contains helium. If not, it can generally be replaced with helium, but it’s still advisable to check with the manufacturer’s technical staff. The choice of chromatography carrier gas should be a gas that is not present in the medium; it cannot be used as a carrier gas if it is capable of reacting with the medium in any way.
