I originally wanted to use an electromagnetic flowmeter and address the issue of measuring when the pipe is not completely filled by designing a U-shaped pipe, but I was concerned that over time sediment would accumulate at the bottom of the U-shape and block the pipeline. I heard that electromagnetic flowmeters are used in combination with level measurement for measuring flow rates when the pipe is not completely filled. Has anyone used this approach? Flow meters for measuring wastewater in open channels are widely used.
Oh, right, but due to limited conditions, it’s not possible to use open channels.
As you said, it’s a U-tube measurement method, with the medium entering from below and exiting from above; a reduced diameter may be used if necessary. Install a drain valve at the very bottom of the U-shaped section to perform regular drainage! When selecting instruments, it is necessary to consider whether the flow rate can meet the minimum requirements.
It’s not easy to choose a flow meter for non-full pipes. Open-channel flow meters are not suitable for measuring in enclosed pipes; they are only applicable to open channels, and must be designed in the form of weirs. For partially filled pipes, ultrasonic flowmeters are generally used, and an additional channel is necessary to measure the liquid level inside the pipe. This requires an experienced manufacturer, and the brand must be good.
The original poster has thought things through quite comprehensively. Our company also uses electromagnetic systems for wastewater treatment; they have already been installed. It seems that that aspect wasn’t considered, and I’m not sure if they will work well in the future
Ultrasonic devices are too expensive; if you need more of them, they become unaffordable.
There’s a good chance that there are still many things that haven’t been taken into account; if they’re installed and buried underground, it will be troublesome if problems arise.

Most sewage pipelines use electromagnetic flowmeters. I’m not sure what kind of sewage pipeline it is – is it a pipeline that leads to a sewage treatment plant? There shouldn’t be many impurities in the treated wastewater, right? Why isn’t the pipeline full? Is it possible to change the operating conditions of the pipeline?
