Is it better to use a hard seal or a soft seal for gas pipelines? What are their advantages and disadvantages?
Gas pipelines use hard seals. Hard seal: A seal in which both sides of the sealing pair are made of metal materials or other relatively hard materials is referred to as a \"hard seal\". This type of seal has poor sealing performance, but it is resistant to high temperatures, wear, and has good mechanical properties. Rigid seals are made of metal, and their sealing performance is relatively poor, although manufacturers claim that zero leakage can be achieved. Soft seal: In a sealing pair, one side is made of a metallic material while the other side is made of an elastic non-metallic material; this type is referred to as a “soft seal”. Such seals offer good sealing performance, but they are not resistant to high temperatures, are prone to wear, and have poor mechanical strength. A soft seal refers to a sealing assembly in which one of the components is made of a material with relatively low hardness. Generally, the soft seal seat is fabricated from non-metallic materials that possess certain strength, hardness, and temperature resistance; it provides good sealing performance and can achieve zero leakage, but its lifespan and adaptability to temperature are relatively poor. The advantage of soft seals is their good sealing performance, while the disadvantages are that they tend to age and wear out easily, resulting in a short service life. Rigid seals have a long service life, but their sealing performance is relatively inferior to that of soft seals. These two types of seals can complement each other; in terms of sealing performance, soft seals are relatively better, but nowadays hard seals also meet the required standards.
What we transport is purified cold gas, with a temperature of around 60 degrees, an impurity content of less than 50 mg, and a pressure of 0.2 MPa; a filter has been added in front of the valve assembly. I also think a soft seal is better; that’s what we have been using in the past. I recently encountered a property owner who has no financial constraints but insisted on using a hard seal; I’m not sure how to convince him otherwise.
Rigid seals are suitable for high-temperature, high-pressure environments with particles and high wear resistance; relatively speaking, soft seals provide a better sealing performance than rigid seals.
