Why add sulfuric acid?

In our company, to treat organic wastewater, we first add sulfuric acid to adjust the pH to an acidic level, then add lime to adjust the pH to an alkaline level, and finally add polyaluminum and polyacrylamide. But by adding acid first and then alkali, isn’t that just a waste of acid? What is the role of adding sulfuric acid? The wastewater mainly contains alcohols and similar substances

Adding sulfuric acid is an acid extraction process. Some organic materials undergo hydrolytic emulsification in alkaline environments and dissolve in water. However, in an acidic environment, hydrolysis does not occur or occurs to a very limited extent, allowing for layered separation; the addition of sulfuric acid can help precipitate the organic substances that are already dissolved in water as a result of the reaction.
It seems to be a basic common-sense question; you only saw the final change in pH value, without taking into account the effect of sulfuric acid
