Can the anaerobic-aerobic process remove phosphorus solely through biological methods, without the use of chemicals?

Biological phosphorus removal mainly involves three stages: anaerobic phosphorus release by phosphorus-accumulating bacteria, aerobic excessive uptake of phosphorus, and disposal of phosphorus-rich sludge. To achieve good results in biological phosphorus removal, it is necessary to maintain a low sludge phosphorus content and a low sludge concentration, with a BOD/TP ratio of ≥15. This is contrary to nitrification in biological nitrogen removal. Biological phosphorus removal has significant limitations; as emission standards become stricter, it has become difficult for conventional domestic wastewater treatment plants to meet these standards relying solely on biological phosphorus removal, and they need to employ physical-chemical methods for phosphorus removal as well (such as phosphorus removers).
