Can a heat exchanger with two tube passes, a nominal diameter of 500 mm and a heat transfer area of 55 m2, be replaced with a heat exchanger with four tube passes, a nominal diameter of 700 mm and a heat transfer area of 120 m2? Friendly reminder: The material, flow rate, and temperature difference remain unchanged.

Personally, I think it’s necessary to consider the process parameters: such as flow rate, pressure drop, heat exchange area, etc., to make a decision.
The material flow rate and temperature difference remain unchanged.
From the perspective of water-to-water heat exchange, it should be possible, but the pressure drop on the tube side will be higher.
It still depends on the specific structural parameters and process conditions; a general assessment isn’t sufficient – factors such as pressure drop, flow velocity, and vibration need to be taken into account.
Are the first two units connected in series or in parallel? . In series, there should be no major problems, but in parallel, the difference in flow area is quite significant.
True, it should have been considered that a four-process unit replacing two two-process units would operate in series; I missed that.
