14 kilograms of steam are flowing through a 1-inch pipe ahead of the steam trap. During operation, it was found that there were pores in the butt weld; plans are to seal the leak while the system is still under pressure. What kind of sealing material would be suitable? I heard that tape can be used for this purpose – what is its price? Can it withstand steam temperature?
Our previous approach was to first block the gap with wooden wedges, then shape that soft metal (I can’t remember its scientific name) and use it to fill the gap; after that, we wrapped tape around it. If the tape wasn’t heat-resistant, we used wire, and we placed wooden blocks in contact with the soft metal used for sealing to prevent the metal from cracking
It’s called weld porosity; there is slight air leakage, and welding repairs cannot be carried out while it’s in operation
14 kilograms of pressure is quite high; I’m not sure if it’s feasible. Our company uses 4 kilograms of low-pressure steam, and the maintenance staff use wire to wedge it into the sand holes.
Isn’t there a shut-off valve in front of the steam trap? If there is one, a temporary cut for ten minutes is sufficient to fix it.
