The sludge has expanded; if this is affecting the quality of the water leaving the sedimentation tank, adding a small amount of flocculant to the water exiting the aerobic tank can help resolve the issue temporarily, but this is only a temporary solution rather than a permanent one
Slow sedimentation is generally caused by sludge bulking, whether it is filamentous sludge bulking or non-filamentous sludge bulking; slow sedimentation can also occur during excessive aeration. Microscopic examination is required, along with the F/M ratio and consideration of dissolved oxygen to make a judgment.
