Dear sea friends, how effective is the use of an online analyzer for monitoring the alkali level in brine solutions? Where is it installed? We still rely on manual analysis at the moment
In ion-exchange membrane caustic soda, it is relatively difficult to analyze the excess alkali content in the primary brine on-line. The titration method is the most accurate way for determining alkalinity. To remove calcium and magnesium ions from the primary brine, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide are used together to form calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide precipitates. During this reaction process, the system functions like a buffer system; therefore, it is not convenient to measure the pH value alone. Meanwhile, on-line titration for detection is quite complex and difficult to maintain. Furthermore, high salt concentrations also restrict sampling and sample transfer in online analyzers; as a result, online analysis is rather difficult, and the cost of such analyzers is very high. Some instruments use colorimetry, but due to the buffering properties of the system, the reliability of this method may be limited; furthermore, free chlorine in saline water may also affect the chromogenic reagent.
