n-Butanol, which is used in the production of plasticizers, turns blue due to residual antioxidant BHT (whose concentration is unknown) in the tank cars; what are the consequences of using it?
If a small amount of antioxidant is present in alcohols, it can prevent the peroxides that form as a result of oxidation by air, which is actually beneficial for storage. Alcohols with antioxidants can generally be used after the antioxidants are removed by flash evaporation, based on the physical properties of those antioxidants. For alcohols without antioxidants, oxidation removal treatment should also be carried out before use; generally, an iron sulfate solution is added to remove the peroxides, and then the alcohol is distilled for use.

Through laboratory comparisons with pilot tests, it was found that the esterified mixture obtained from the reaction of butanol containing an antioxidant with phthalic anhydride had a much lighter color than that of the group using butanol without an antioxidant. It can be determined that the antioxidants present played a role in preventing the oxidation of n-butanol.
