The main wastewater flowing into our plant is domestic sewage, along with a small amount of industrial wastewater (we don’t know from which factories it comes). The incoming water is black; after treatment using the SBR process, the COD level decreases significantly, but the ammonia nitrogen level only drops by about 5%. The effluent water remains black as well. What could be the reason for this? Thank you!
Based on what you’ve described, the nitrifying bacteria have not yet become dominant, and the biochemical dissolved oxygen level is low; It can increase dissolved oxygen, raise the SV or sludge concentration, extend the sludge age, and facilitate the establishment of nitrification as quickly as possible.
Generally, SBR achieves a good removal rate for chroma; there is no change in the quality of the effluent compared to that of the inlet water. This is likely due to anaerobic or partial anaerobic conditions in the SBR system, so trying to increase the dissolved oxygen level might help.

Through processes such as water intake, aeration, sedimentation, water discharge, and idling, SBR carries out anaerobic/anoxic and aerobic reactions; aerobic nitrification is used to oxidize ammonia nitrogen, while anoxic denitrification is used to remove nitrate nitrogen.
