What are the advantages and disadvantages of mixed-bed reactors compared to double-bed reactors?
Advantages: Good water quality of the output water; The quality of the effluent water remains stable ; The exchange endpoint is obvious ; There are few mixed-bed units, and they are located in concentrated areas. Disadvantages: The utilization rate of the exchange capacity of the mixed-bed resin is low, there is significant resin loss, the regeneration process is complex, and to ensure the quality of the effluent water, a large amount of regenerant often needs to be used.
Compared with mixed-bed reactors, mixed-bed-hybrid reactors have the following advantages: 1. Better water quality of the output water. A mixed-bed composed of strongly acidic and strongly basic resins results in effluent with a salt residue of less than 1.0 mg/L, a conductivity of less than 0.2 μS/cm, a residual SiO2 level of less than 20 μg/L, and a pH value that is close to neutral. 2. The quality of the effluent water is stable. Changes in working conditions generally have little impact on the water quality of the output from mixed-bed reactors. 3. Intermittent operation has little impact on the quality of the effluent water. Whether it is a mixed-bed or a double-bed exchanger, when it is put back into operation after stopping, the quality of the water output at the beginning will decline, and it takes some time of operation for it to return to its original level. This may be due to water quality contamination caused by the ion exchange equipment itself and the pipeline materials. The time required to return to normal operation is 3–5 minutes for mixed-bed systems, while it takes more than 10 minutes for regenerative bed systems. 4. The exchange endpoint is distinct. Before the mixed-bed fails at the end of its operation, the conductivity of the water exiting it increases rapidly, which is beneficial not only for operational monitoring but also for achieving automatic control. 5. There are few units for mixed-bed systems, and they are installed in a centralized manner. Disadvantages: 1. Low utilization rate of the exchange capacity of the mixed-bed resin ; 2. High resin loss ; 3. The regeneration process is complex and requires a long time ; 4. To ensure the quality of the effluent water, a large amount of regenerant often needs to be used.
