A few years after the storage and transportation tank area was put into use, the anti-corrosion coatings on the gasoline and diesel tanks aged and peeled off. Sandblasting was carried out on each oil tank for anti-corrosion purposes; what measures should be taken during this sandblasting process to avoid damaging the tanks whose anti-corrosion coatings were already in place? My idea is to surround the tank with frames and then cover everything with metal sheeting, so that the sand sprayed out won’t damage the tanks that have already been coated for corrosion protection or any other facilities. This approach will be a bit more costly. I wonder if there are any other economical and feasible solutions.

The area of damage won’t be very large, so the cost is relatively low. During sandblasting for the anti-corrosion of large oil tanks, such situations often occur
When other tanks in the vicinity were damaged, it was not possible to tell at that time; it was only months later, when rust spots appeared, that it became clear that the damage was caused by sandblasting. By then, it was no longer possible to determine with the construction party whether the damage was due to sandblasting or to problems with the anti-corrosion quality of that particular tank (the anti-corrosion work was carried out by another company)
In fact, something can be done with the sandblasting gun nozzle – by using a dome-shaped cover to shield it, it is possible to prevent the dust from affecting the tanks in the surrounding area. Additionally, there are currently high-end products that can be cleaned with a water jet and then directly coated.
Our water-based anti-corrosion coatings have the following key feature: the primer can undergo a complexation reaction with the rust on carbon steel surfaces to form stable compounds; therefore, only simple removal of loose rust is required on the surface of the tanks. Active rust removal involves using chemical reactions to convert rust into a stable compound, preventing further oxidation and forming a protective layer that acts as a rust inhibitor. If it is scraped off, fresh iron will be exposed underneath. It has low requirements for the construction surface; no rust removal is needed. The construction requirements are low, the workload for workers is minimal, the protection duration is long, and maintenance intervals are reduced.
Sometimes it’s not just the sand ejected by the spray gun that damages other tanks; it could be that the sand hits the wall of a tank and bounces off, causing damage to other tanks as well.
