The company is building a new factory, and I handed over the equipment drawings and process flow diagrams to the design institute; it will take them over a month to complete the piping work. The management thinks that the price of steel is going to rise, so they want us employees to estimate the quantity needed in order to purchase a batch of pipes first. But without pipe layout diagrams, how can we make the purchase? And how should we explain this to the management?
Have the design institute provide an approximate quantity and specifications first, so that purchases can be made in advance
This can only be estimated based on experience; if there are similar devices, they can serve as a reference. It would be best to ask the design institute to provide an estimate; it’s just not clear whether they are willing to do so.
If there is a floor plan, it can be estimated roughly

Contact a design firm to have them provide the approximate material specifications and quantities
First, estimate the pipe diameter based on the specified flow velocity requirements and process flow rates in the chemical process design manual (for greater accuracy, use the chemical process calculation handbook); roughly determine the quantity needed, and then purchase 60%-70% of that amount
There’s no need to buy pipes in advance; unless you have a large volume of work, it’s not worth the hassle
