One question is regarding the continuous operating time of a pump without any failures – how long can we generally state this to be? Another similar question is that customers often ask whether it’s necessary to have a backup pump for such pumps, and whether it’s okay for them to operate continuously; how often should they be switched over? (We assume that the customer’s system requires the pump to run continuously.) A friend of mine said that a pump should not run continuously for more than a few hundred hours, otherwise the motor won’t be able to handle it. My understanding is that there’s no problem with the pump running continuously, as the motor is designed for S1 continuous operation. As long as the motor isn’t overloaded and the pump operates normally, it can keep running until it develops a fault, or roughly every six months, according to the maintenance schedule set by the customer’s own equipment department. :handshake I hope everyone will share their insights. We don’t have such a concept; one of our pumps has been in use for over a decade, and aside from the major maintenance every three years, it has never stopped working at any other time, leaving the backup pump as nothing more than a decoration. Generally, it is required that backup pumps be switched every three months, but they are not repaired even if they stop working without any faults.
The API standard has been operating continuously for 3 years.
The problems that occur with all devices usually manifest most frequently during startup and shutdown; therefore, it is not recommended to stop the pump frequently
You can refer to the petrochemical maintenance procedures to establish your own standards
We purchase pumps for use in the chemical industry, where high standards are required; generally, they are expected to operate without failure for 3 years (as specified by API610). However, this applies except for wear-prone components such as mechanical seals and gaskets. For civilian use, there’s no need for such high requirements; the specifications can be set according to actual conditions. The higher the requirements, the higher the cost of the pump, so it’s advisable to find a balance point.
