What is the reason for maintaining a high temperature in the Claus sulfur recovery furnace? Is it related to the presence of ammonia? Is it to ensure complete combustion of ammonia?

Ammonia burning requires a temperature of over 1250 degrees; even if ammonia burning is not used, the flame will be unstable if the furnace temperature is below 926 degrees. If the temperature is too low, the decomposition of hydrocarbons will also be incomplete.

The acidic gas composition of typical refinery gas is primarily determined by the H2S concentration; this concentration is sufficient to raise the adiabatic temperature to over 1000°C. In some purification units, a lower concentration of H2S makes it impossible to maintain such high temperatures. However, a higher temperature is necessary; firstly, to ensure the stability of the combustion flame, as it becomes unstable below around 900 degrees. Gas supply, preheating, or oxygen enrichment may be required. Then, as you mentioned, it’s necessary to break down impurities such as hydrocarbons and ammonia; ammonia requires a higher temperature for this purpose. Some say the lowest temperature is 1204, while others say it’s 1250. To achieve levels in the PPM range, some suggest heating to around 1400, while others say 1500; this may be related to the calculation software or experimental conditions such as equipment performance. As for the combustion of ammonia, some say that it is primarily oxidized and decomposed, while others claim that it mainly reacts with SO2 to produce H2S, water, and nitrogen.
