Solid catalysts are widely used in the chemical industry, in applications such as hydrogen production via hydrogenation, catalytic cracking, reforming, methanol production, and many other processes. Catalysts have a certain lifespan; once their function is completed, only a very small number of those containing rare metals or precious metals are recycled by the manufacturers! But where did most of the catalysts go? Where is its endpoint? Some are buried, while others are left piled up in some place; either way, they cause pollution to the environment. Can we discuss together how to handle these catalyst waste materials in an environmentally harmless way? How can we recycle the useful materials inside as much as possible? What process to use? What’s needed are those types of catalysts; currently, most catalysts cannot be recycled or disposed of, and the only option is to turn to qualified organizations for handling them, with most of them ultimately ending up in storage!
I work in SCR denitration for thermal power plants, and from what I know, the SCR catalysts are vanadium-tungsten-titanium-based. Catalyst treatment still needs to be carried out by qualified solid waste treatment manufacturers, and it seems there are regulations prohibiting such treatment across provinces. Currently, the disposal of used catalysts remains a very troublesome issue.
According to statistics, the vast majority of catalysts recovered in China at present are precious metal-based catalysts, as they are profitable; most other types of catalysts receive little attention. This remains a source of pollution, and there is a need for technological breakthroughs and policy support.
Currently, under the solid waste management regulations, catalysts are defined as hazardous solid waste
Although it is already classified as hazardous waste, there are still people who buy and process the heavy metals contained in it. Moreover, dealing with hazardous waste requires going through many procedures, which is indeed rather troublesome.
