“\"Remote\" might not refer to a great physical distance, but rather to a \"remote\" position in terms of topological logic; take a look at the manufacturer’s hardware manual. Sometimes, some IO devices are placed in locations where the field equipment is concentrated, far away from the control room, and then connected back to the control room via fiber optics, in order to save on cable purchases and installation costs. Sometimes, being “remote” from a topological perspective is due to the fact that the number of “local IOs” available is insufficient to meet actual needs, in which case a “remote IO template” must be used; it depends on the specific circumstances.
