Can a stainless steel material be used for the ammonia condenser?
It is best to use stainless steel; our heat exchangers used to be made of carbon steel, but perforation and corrosion problems occurred, so they have now been replaced with stainless steel, which is indeed more durable. The heat exchange media include ammonia, ethylene, propylene, steam, and ethanol.
Carbon steel is the preferred material for ammonia condensers. Because: 1. The thermal conductivity of stainless steel is about 20% lower than that of carbon steel ； 2. Ammonia basically does not corrode carbon steel ； 3. The price of stainless steel is at least 4 times that of carbon steel ； 4. The processing and manufacturing of stainless steel, especially welding, are much more difficult than those of carbon steel ； 5. If water cooling is used, it is also necessary to guard against chloride ions in tap water, as these ions can cause stress corrosion in austenitic stainless steel.
I think what was said on the 3rd floor makes sense; all of our company’s products are made of carbon steel.
