For transporting refined oil, with a flow rate of 500 cubic meters per hour and a head of 120 meters, can a mechanical seal achieve zero leakage under normal operating conditions? I read in the specifications that the leakage rate should be a few drops per minute, but some manufacturers told me that there should be no leakage at all; any leakage indicates that the seal is damaged, right?
There are standards for mechanical seal leakage; a certain level of leakage is permitted, whether it is a single-face or double-face seal. The key is to look at the quantity.

It’s impossible for a regular mechanical seal to achieve zero leakage – that’s nonsense. Shielded pumps and magnetic pumps are leak-free pumps
To prevent leakage, shielded pumps or magnetic pumps should be used, which are generally applied to materials at ** or low temperatures. Ordinary pumps still leak.
When the temperature of the refined oil is low, a double-face mechanical seal can be used to prevent leakage; leakage occurs when the mechanical seal is damaged.
By zero leakage, the poster is referring to a dry gas seal, right?
If assembled properly, it can remain leak-free for a while, but this is not guaranteed over an extended period; even if there is a leak, it may still meet the requirements.
Most seals are like this. Just as mentioned above. . . Sometimes it is indeed guaranteed to be leak-free, but leaks are also within the manufacturer’s requirements. It’s really hard to say about this; it all depends on fate
