The industry mostly uses water washing. By water washing, water is used during the first operation; after the washing solution circulates once, it dissolves sulfur trioxide from the flue gas, causing the solution to become acidic – that is what is meant by dilute acid washing. At present, the vast majority of acid production and purification systems for smelting flue gas rely on dilute acid washing. As for the yield of acidic waste, it is determined through balancing factors such as the dust content in the flue gas. The acidity of the dilute acid used for washing is generally between 5% and 10%; in some companies, in order to reduce the amount of dilute acid, the circulation process is intensified to increase its concentration to nearly 20%, depending mainly on the balance of dust and other ions present.
