Several sets of compressor coolers in our company require cooling using circulating water; therefore, it is necessary to build a circulating water tank as well as install related facilities such as cooling towers and pumps. We use tap water for replenishment, with no other chemical treatments. After running for some time (especially in hot weather), it was found that there was a lot of moss at the bottom and around the pool. During shutdown, the pool should be drained and cleaned, then refilled with tap water. We find that cleaning the pool is very labor-intensive every time, and it’s not easy to clean it thoroughly. Secondly, it takes a long time to empty the pool each time, which is quite wasteful of water. I was wondering if any of you experts have any good suggestions or ways to solve this issue? It is necessary to regularly add agents such as bactericides and algaecides, as well as scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors to the circulating water; otherwise, water pollution can easily occur, leading to blockages, scaling, and corrosion in the circulating water system. This affects the cooling efficiency and the safe operation of the equipment. It is also important to regularly test the quality of the circulating water, checking parameters such as pH, hardness, and chloride levels to ensure that the water meets the required standards.
Chilled water requires chemical treatment, and it is advisable to clean the water system once a year. Take water samples for testing on a regular basis; using tap water directly for cooling can cause significant damage to the pipes, cooling towers, and the coolers of compressors. When the pipes are covered with scale, their cooling efficiency is significantly reduced.
Either use a closed loop; for an open loop, it’s best to add chemicals.

The concentration of circulating water needs to be controlled appropriately; in addition, scale and corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and the like are required to ensure the safe operation of the system. At present, you are only seeing problems with moss and sludge deposits; in fact, what is even more serious are the sludge and scale deposits inside the compressor equipment, as well as the corrosion that occurs beneath these deposits. If the equipment becomes clogged or suffers from corrosion-induced perforations, it becomes unusable. The contents of the tank can be cleaned manually, but if there’s a problem with the equipment, that’s a serious issue. Some literature indicates that normal wastewater discharge can only reduce the sediment in the circulating water system by 1/5 to 1/3; therefore, it is necessary to regularly clean the sludge in the tower tanks. Using closed-loop clean water as a medium for compressors is not a viable approach, as a simple closed-loop system still requires an open system or an ice-water chiller for cooling, and this does not fully solve the problem. Proper maintenance of the circulating water system is still necessary to ensure safe operation while saving costs.
