What is the function of the air hole at the top of the main body of a magnetic flap level gauge?

There is a gas hole with a diameter of about five millimeters on the back side of the top of the float of the magnetic flap level gauge in our unit. What is its purpose? These past two days, gas has suddenly started to come out; it wasn’t there before. What’s going on? Can it be blocked?
