When applying for professional titles, what is the difference between being the first author and the second author on a research paper for such purposes? If you write a paper and a colleague asks to have his name on it, what impact will that have on your professional title evaluation?
Having someone as a second author has no impact on the first author.
What’s the impact of listing a colleague as a co-author? The original poster is overthinking it. If a requirement for professional title evaluation specifies 2 papers by the first author and an additional author is needed, you can also ask someone else to serve as the second author on your behalf.
So if all the authors of a paper are second authors, can it be used for professional title evaluation?
This probably won’t work; from what I know, there’s no rule stating that only the second author can be considered for evaluation. The second author usually just serves as a formality and doesn’t really serve any purpose.
Just look at the first author; it’s fine to have several of them. Colleagues should help each other
