The recycling of polymer waste is gaining increasing attention, and the recycling of PET materials is one example. Abandoned mineral water bottles, beverage bottles, polyester fabrics, clothes (polyester, polyester blends), and other PET products can be utilized to produce the environmentally friendly plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP). I have previously used the aforementioned waste to produce DOTP, and through processes such as screening, crushing, degradation, transesterification, distillation, neutralization and washing, decolorization, and pressure filtration, I have produced a product that can be used in fields such as power cables and synthetic leather. The distillation residue can also be used as a filler in low-grade plastic products, and the by-product ethylene glycol can be recovered. Through such recycling, the amount of PET waste can be reduced, and useful dioctyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol products can be produced, thereby reducing the use of petroleum resources – achieving two goals at once.
The reuse of energy is a good thing
There are already several such manufacturing enterprises in the country that specialize in producing DOTP from recycled PET materials, while generating ethylene glycol as a by-product.
