Acidic gas in the middle of the Klaus bed

In our process, part of the process gas flows directly into the middle of the first stage of the Claus reactor. The catalytic oxidizer also has a stream that goes directly to the middle – what is its main function? I’ve never used it; is it used to open a valve and cool down when the temperature gets too high? Please give your advice~
