A certain standard issued by the Ministry of Chemical Industry states that for nitric acid (HNO3 with a density of 1.42 g/mL), the concentration ranges from 940 mL/L to 1050 mL/L. What does 1050 mL/L mean? I think there seems to be an issue with this; I would appreciate an explanation from a professional. Thank you. For further clarification, this standard is the [Aeronautical Industry Standard] HB Z 347-2002 – Anodizing Process and Quality Inspection for Titanium and Titanium Alloys. Section 10.2 b) specifies that the film layer should be removed using the following anhydrous solutions and process conditions: Nitric acid (HNO3 with a density of 1.42 g/mL) at a concentration of 940 mL/L–1050 mL/L, and hydrofluoric acid (HF at 40% concentration) at a concentration of 205 g/L–250 g/L. What does the value of 1050 mL/L mean? Thank you
mL/L is a unit of concentration. 1050 mL/L means a nitric acid (HNO3) solution obtained by adding water to 1050 ml of concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) until the total volume reaches 1 L. This is the unit for solution concentration that is determined based on the form of the solvent
I don’t understand. 1L means 1000 ml; how can 1050 ml be brought to 1000 ml? It exceeds 1000 ml without adding any water, right? For 940mL/L–1050mL/L, I think the unit might be incorrect; it could possibly be mg/L.

When using concentrated acids, volume is generally used as the measurement unit, as the concentration of such acids, especially volatile ones, is not very stable. From the perspective of concentration representation methods, the standard mentioned by the original poster must be one that was established earlier. You should first consult the organization responsible for formulating the standard or its drafters to obtain detailed information, so that any parts that are difficult to understand correctly can be updated when the standard is revised or reissued.
