As a student, when stepping out of school and entering the workplace, one is usually filled with passion and enthusiasm, driven by the ambition to achieve great things and to prove one’s worth through work in order to realize one’s lofty aspirations. However, most students also go through a kind of rebirth-like ordeal, a difficult journey from heaven to hell, which can even cause deep psychological trauma. I am one of those who experienced a huge psychological disparity when moving from school to the workplace, to the point where it was difficult for me to recover. But at that time, I was fortunate enough to meet my first mentor in life, who was also the class monitor. His surname is Xi, and his name is Xi Dewu. He is a few years older than me; he graduated from junior high school and started working in a factory at the age of 18. Thanks to his intelligence, eagerness to learn, and hard work, he was promoted to team leader after just 2 years of working there, and he also enjoyed considerable respect among the workers. After I started working at the factory, I felt that the knowledge I had learned was completely useless; I lacked on-the-job experience, as well as physical strength, and I was always at a disadvantage when working alongside other workers ； As a result, some workers began to view me more negatively, and from time to time I would hear harsh or hurtful remarks such as “It’s pointless to have taken this course,” “Is your diploma fake?” and “You’re good for nothing.” These words were like knives piercing my heart, so I became extremely depressed and felt immense psychological distress. Sometimes I even took leave without any reason just to avoid going to work, out of fear of it. Squad leader Xi saw that I was in poor condition and was very worried about me. He always encouraged me, stepped in to uphold justice whenever the workers made fun of me, and often brought me some delicious food. It was also a conversation I had alone with Squad Leader Xi that led to my change of mind; it could be said that one sentence revealed the person in my dreams. “Xiao Zhao, do you think going to school is useful? ”I said, “It’s useless, and it only leads to humiliation.” “That’s a complete mistake; knowledge is always useful. You’re feeling down now because you haven’t applied your knowledge. You’re comparing your weaknesses with the strengths of other workers, and of course you can’t compete with them.” You are young, knowledgeable, educated, and intelligent – why not put in some effort in technology? ” Although there wasn’t much to say and the principle was simple, I was truly enlightened, as if waking from a dream. Yes, why not make use of my strengths? If one just wants to be a worker, then isn’t it really pointless to go through this education? So, during the following period, I checked the processes on site every day, reviewed the operating procedures and drawings as well as relevant documents, and often asked experienced workers and technicians for advice on technical issues; I once again became the enthusiastic and passionate person I was when I first arrived at the factory. After months of hard work, I finally came in first place in the company-wide technical competition and passed the process assessment with full marks; as a result, I was promoted to the technician position 3 months ahead of schedule. I thank Squad Leader Xi, and I thank that conversation; otherwise, I wouldn’t have known how much longer I would have had to wander around in confusion, before I could get out of that difficult situation and regain my confidence and sense of self! After that, Squad Leader Xi remained under my command, and I took special care of him; I would visit him during holidays. But once I went to the south, our contact gradually diminished. I miss my old squad leader!
