It worked fine during the holiday before the New Year, but as soon as I started using it at work, the pump broke – it leaked air and stopped working. It took 2 days to fix it. . . . . . . . .

It took me two half-days of hard work to figure out what was wrong; the leak was caused by an O-ring the size of a grain of rice, which had become aged. It’s likely that the extreme cold just before the New Year caused it to deteriorate. But then I thought again – this pump has been in use for 5 years, so it’s normal for one of its components to fail. .
Without an understanding of the material properties, it’s unclear why many things work fine when in use, but start to have problems once they are stopped and restarted
Experience shows that it is related to thermal expansion and contraction. I’ve encountered this before: about two days before driving, all the pumps were tested and there were no issues at all. When testing the pumps again before driving, both pumps (in the same set, one in use and one as a backup) were leaking heavily – frustrating:Q.
