Position of the pump outlet check valve

Should the check valve at the pump outlet be placed upstream or downstream of the minimum return line, or is either location acceptable? Also, what considerations should be taken into account when there is a backup pump – can the same check valve be used? Thank you
My personal opinion: HG20559 can be used as a reference. Generally, the minimum return line is located downstream of the check valve, while the bypass connects across the check valve and the isolation valve. The two pumps cannot share a check valve to prevent the pumps from reversing.

If it is a dual-pump system, it makes sense to place the minimum return line downstream of the check valve; but how is this considered in the case of a single-pump system?
What’s the difference between upstream and downstream? Is it before or after the check valve? Regardless of the number of circuits or pumps, check valves should be installed on the main pipeline where the branches begin, or on each individual branch
