Hello everyone, I have a question. I work in pipeline design for a small company. Due to many small projects, there is insufficient preliminary data – sometimes none at all. In most cases, all that is available are information on the properties of the fluid, as well as its temperature and pressure. How can one determine the appropriate material for the pipelines under such circumstances, especially when there are multiple types of pipes available to choose from? For example, in the case of oxygen pipelines, Inconel is used under high temperature and pressure conditions, but S3040@Grizzly 3 stainless steel can be used under normal operating conditions. How can one choose the appropriate pipeline material in the absence of a process specification sheet or a table of material grades? Is it possible to rely on grade tables from other companies that deal with similar systems under similar conditions? I would appreciate guidance from those with experience in pipelines and materials.
If you designers don’t select the right pipe materials, it’s a real nightmare for us who work on valves.
