In distillation operations, the ratio of the reflux flow rate L returning to the tower from the top of the distillation column to the product flow rate D at the tower top is given by R = L/D. The size of the reflux ratio has a significant impact on both the separation efficiency and the economic viability of the distillation process. Therefore, in distillation design, the reflux ratio is a parameter that needs to be carefully selected.

Ratio of return flow to extraction flow
The size of the reflux ratio is determined by the ease of separating the various components (i.e., the relative volatility) as well as the requirements regarding product quality. For binary or multicomponent systems, it is determined by the calculations of the distillation process. For the oil distillation process, empirical or semi-empirical methods are primarily used for design in China, with the reflux ratio mainly determined by the heat balance of the entire column. During the production process, the number of trays or the theoretical number of trays in the distillation column remains constant; increasing the reflux ratio raises the concentration of the light components at the top of the column, thereby improving their quality. For simple towers in which one product is obtained at each of the top and bottom, when increasing the reflux ratio it is necessary to pay attention to increasing the evaporation rate of the reboiler at the bottom of the tower. For complex oil distillation towers that produce products from multiple side streams, when increasing the reflux ratio it is important to adjust the flow rates of each side stream in order to maintain a proper material balance and ensure the quality of the products obtained from those side streams.
