Dear experts, I have a question: taking an oil refinery with an annual refining capacity of 10 million tons as an example, how much waste oil is generated each year? I’m curious to know that if there is a large amount of contaminated oil, which can be divided into light and heavy types, how is it ultimately disposed of? If it is reprocessed, there will always be some heavy contaminated oil that cannot be dealt with – so what should be done with that portion?

It’s hard to say anything specific about newcomers; the amount of contaminated oil depends on the type of oil being processed and the equipment used, as well as the production schedule. For example, recently we often encountered issues with naphtha that didn’t meet standards – some of that oil went through the gasoline production line while another portion went through the light-contaminated oil line. As for heavier fractions, they are probably sent to downstream facilities via the residue stream. . . . I’m not sure if what I’m saying is correct; I’ll wait for other experts to add more

During normal production, there is very little contaminated oil; it mainly arises from product defects caused by fluctuations in plant operation, which leads to such oil entering the contaminated oil system. The main sources of contaminated oil are defective products generated during shutdowns and cooling/pressure reduction processes, as well as contaminated oil produced during the cold oil circulation and heating/pressure increase phases at startup. Additionally, contaminated oil is generated during the adjustment operations after startup. The amount of such oil depends on the duration of shutdowns and startups, the volume of circulation, and the length of time spent on adjustment operations. Generally, this contaminated oil is sent back for reprocessing, and the operating parameters of the atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, along with the extraction rates, are adjusted accordingly based on the quality and quantity of the contaminated oil being reprocessed. This usually does not have a significant impact on operations. Some heavier forms of contaminated oil, if they meet the required criteria, can also be sent to catalytic processors for reprocessing.
