I have just started working in chemical process management and don’t know where to begin. I would like to ask the experts on this website for advice – perhaps someone among them can help me out?
Be humble, start from the basics, work hard and pay close attention
Process management is a quite broad topic; only part of it can be discussed in forums. Moreover, in most chemical plants, process management is integrated with production management, while in very few companies, production management and process management are handled by separate teams. 1. Operating procedures, process technical specifications, and process cards: They specify the normal operating steps and procedures for dealing with abnormal situations, as well as parameter control, all of which are aimed at maintaining a controlled state. 2. Reports: material consumption, energy consumption, balance, as well as various analysis data. Where there is data, there can be comparisons, thereby identifying gaps. 3. Operational analysis and process optimization: mainly involves curve and data analysis to identify problems and propose solutions (there is overlap with point 2). 4. Training: This includes the difficulty level of the training content, as well as the focus on specific aspects versus a broader overview; it also covers the creation of records related to training and examinations and their subsequent summary. 5. Departmental coordination: This involves interactions between superiors and subordinates, as well as between departments that operate at the same level. There is much to consider in this area – it’s not enough to simply reach out to department members in haste whenever something happens; a proactive approach is needed. It’s necessary to plan ahead, determine what needs to be done and which personnel will be required to assist, while also taking into account the skills of those individuals. For various reasons, some people may not have the ability to handle certain issues. 6. Major event management: startup and shutdown, changes in process routes, changes in raw materials and reagents, and verification of effectiveness.
