The jade-selling scam I encountered today

Today I visited the local antique market, and I stopped at a stall that sold coins and jade items. A young man in his twenties came over and asked the stall owner if he bought jade. The owner said he did, and the young man took out a white jade bracelet from his jacket pocket. The owner’s eyes lit up immediately; he took the bracelet from the young man’s hands and examined it carefully, clearly very fond of it. The owner asked where the young man got it and how much he wanted for it. The young man said he had it from home and didn’t know much about it, asking the owner to make an offer. The owner said that the young man should first give a price so that he could counteroffer. The young man mentioned that similar items in the shops were sold for seven or eight thousand. The owner replied that those were items sold in shops, and if he wanted to sell it there, he would offer at most three hundred. Hearing this, the young man took back the bracelet and left. The owner quickly tried to stop him, suggesting they discuss it further, and then took out all the money he had in his pockets, which was around five hundred, saying that that was the best he could offer and asking the young man to sell it to him. The young man began to hesitate, muttering that this was Hetian jade and would not be sold for less than two or three thousand, while glancing at me from time to time. I suddenly realized that he wanted to sell it to me; realizing it was a trick, I walked away. To confirm my assumption, I went back there about an hour later and took a look from a distance at that stall; I saw that the young man was still there, standing not far from the stall and watching the tourists passing by. Upon returning, I thought carefully about what had happened and realized that their approach was quite clever. First, the vendor immediately showed great interest in the bracelet, which gave the impression that it was a valuable item. Second, when the vendor asked the young man where he got the bracelet, he replied vaguely that he had gotten it from home, which made it seem as though the bracelet had an uncertain origin and that the young man was eager to get rid of it. Thirdly, the young man mentioned on several occasions that the bracelet was sold for seven or eight thousand in the mall, and the vendor did not deny this. When the young man said it should be sold for at least two or three thousand, the vendor simply emphasized that he only had five hundred with him, implying that a price of two or three thousand was reasonable. Fortunately, I know nothing about jade artifacts, so I wouldn’t even consider buying them. If I had only a superficial understanding, I might have fallen for the low price and gotten tricked. I’m not sure if anyone was tricked today, so I’m writing this to warn everyone.
