Our coking plant supplies gas to steel mill customers. Last year, an insert-type Pitot tube flow meter was installed on a 980 cm pipeline; the meter was located 10 meters away from a bend. The medium in question was coke oven gas, with a pressure of 5.5 Kpa and a temperature of 35 degrees. The normal flow rate was 10,000 cubic meters per hour. Yet, several times a day, the flow rate would drop to zero intermittently, and the transmitter would show negative values, before returning to normal after about half a minute. We suspect that this phenomenon might be caused by insufficient length of straight pipe section, resulting in surge effects that cause the reading to reset to zero
There might be a poor connection in the wiring.
This flow meter operates on the principle of differential pressure; such a situation may occur if the sensing element becomes blocked for a short period of time. This is because the medium being measured is gas, and the tar present in gas can cause blockages
Remove it, clean it, reinstall it, and then observe whether the aforementioned phenomenon still occurs. If the same issue occurs on the day it is replaced, then a blockage is unlikely to be the cause. It may be caused by local flow instability in the pipeline; such instability is related to the gas usage downstream, as well as the piping layout, installation location, and pipeline branches. Of course, this assumes that the differential pressure transmitter is not taken into account, and it is also assumed that there is no problem with the sensor itself.
What you said makes sense; it’s just as I thought. I guess it’s due to the frequent adjustments in gas usage by previous customers and the instability of the gas supply
