Recently, the atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit of Daqing Refining & Chemical Company installed external insulation in the convection chambers of 3 heating furnaces, which reduced heat loss from the furnace walls. As a result, the temperature inside the furnaces decreased by an average of 18°C, leading to a yearly savings of 93.43 tons of fuel oil and cost reductions of 287,000 yuan. The heating furnace is the major energy consumer in this workshop, accounting for over 76% of the workshop’s total energy consumption. To further reduce energy consumption, the workshop began in November 2013 to install external insulation around the convection chamber of the heating furnace, with the aim of keeping the external surface temperature of this chamber at around 0°C in winter and close to the ambient temperature in summer. To improve the insulation efficiency and durability, the workshop made thorough preparations in terms of material selection and construction for insulation; the inner layer uses two layers of 50-cm-thick glass fiber mat, while the outer layer is made of galvanized corrugated iron that does not deform easily.
