When carbon monoxide is hydrogenated, methane and water are produced; three parts of hydrogen are required for each part of carbon monoxide. Excess levels of carbon monoxide can lead to catalyst poisoning – when the hydrogen contains 2% carbon monoxide, the catalyst’s activity can decline rapidly. The presence of carbon dioxide not only reduces the purity of hydrogen but also reacts with the ammonia produced by hydrogenation to form ammonium salts, which crystallize at low temperatures and block the pipes, increasing the system pressure drop. Generally, the carbon dioxide content in fresh hydrogen is required to be less than 0.5%.
