China currently has over 500,000 industrial boilers, which consume about one-third of the country’s total coal consumption each year. The environmental pollution caused by these coal-fired industrial boilers is severe, and a large number of them need to be replaced with clean energy sources. Given the conditions of biomass resources in our country, using agricultural and forestry residues as fuel for boilers offers environmental benefits and is a renewable resource. Studying the combustion technology of biomass boilers and developing such boilers is of great significance for saving conventional energy sources, optimizing China’s energy structure, and reducing environmental pollution. A high thermal efficiency indicates better energy-saving and environmental protection performance of the boiler. Thermal efficiency is an important technical and economic indicator for biomass boilers; it reflects the degree of sophistication of the boiler equipment as well as the level of operational management. Fuel is one of the important energy sources, and improving the thermal efficiency of biomass boilers to save fuel is an important aspect of boiler operation management. To comprehensively assess the performance of biomass boilers, it is necessary to test them.

Hello, my field of expertise is related to biomass gasification. There is potential in this area, but it’s limited; biomass energy can only serve as an auxiliary source of energy, and its application is restricted to certain regions – mainly the Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces as well as areas in the north where energy is scarce. Currently, the cost of using biomass as an energy source is much higher than that of other fuels, primarily due to the high costs associated with downstream processing. For industrial boilers that use biomass fuel for combustion, the best technical approach is carbon molecular gasification combustion. Its advantages over direct combustion are: environmental protection (preventing pollution at the source and ensuring compliance with emission standards) and energy savings (saving more than 30% more electricity compared to other direct combustion systems).
Biomass has a relatively low energy density, and the costs of collection and transportation are high; even at high combustion temperatures, there is still a problem with NOx emissions. Small boilers are more suitable for distributed use; they are not appropriate for large-scale equipment.
Regarding biomass boilers, environmental protection policies vary from place to place; some provinces do not approve of their use, as environmental issues cannot be resolved with them. Additionally, environmental protection agencies in various regions are exerting greater pressure to require that coal-fired boilers be replaced with those that use gas, fuel, or biomass.
