Do any of you maritime professionals know any anti-corrosion solutions for jet fuel storage tanks? Is there any aluminum spraying available? How is it working?
1. Due to the high requirements regarding impurity levels in the quality of aviation fuel, filter elements with a 1-micron rating are required, which implies high demands on the anti-corrosion coating. There is no difference between external anti-corrosion and finished oil tanks. However, the internal anti-corrosion layer must be 100% fully protective; the anti-corrosion materials required are special and must not peel off. 2. Coating protection is used; the necessity of a sacrificial anode should be considered depending on the circumstances, in order to reduce corrosion in case of coating defects. Anti-static anti-corrosion coatings must never be used for coating, as using them in combination with a sacrificial anode will accelerate the dissolution of the anode, thereby eliminating its proper cathodic protection function.
Could you elaborate on the anti-corrosion plan? What about aluminum spraying followed by a sealing coat? Is the sealing paint epoxy or polyurethane?
Aircraft kerosene has a low sulfur content, which reduces corrosion of mechanical components. However, impurities such as antioxidants, antistatic agents, and tetraethyl lead (used to raise the flash point) can have an impact. To meet anti-corrosion requirements, complete isolation is necessary; the materials used must not conduct static electricity. Polymer ceramic coatings can be employed for anti-corrosion protection, thereby completely preventing contact between the medium and the substrate and achieving the desired anti-corrosion effect. Moreover, the polymer ceramic coating possesses high physical strength, preventing localized damage.
The coating is made from vinyl ester resin, contains no metal ions, and is static-free. Currently, the companies that do well in producing ethylene are Shangwei and DSM.
Polymer ceramic coating? Heard about this preservation method for the first time? Is it easy to construct? Recently, I encountered a case where aluminum spraying was used for corrosion protection, but it wasn’t done properly.
Do you mean that aluminum spraying will no longer be done, and this ethylene-based coating will be applied directly after the tank walls are rust removed?

Good construction; roughening treatments such as sandblasting are required on the interior, followed by applying a coating. It’s not difficult at all!
