Therefore, plate heat exchangers have a high heat transfer coefficient, typically 3 to 5 times that of shell and tube heat exchangers. 2. In terms of floor space, plate heat exchangers have a compact structure; the heat exchange area per unit volume is 2 to 5 times that of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Moreover, they do not require space for removing the tube bundles for maintenance, like shell-and-tube heat exchangers do. Therefore, to achieve the same heat exchange capacity, plate heat exchangers require only about 1/5 to 1/10 of the floor space needed by shell-and-tube heat exchangers. 3. Light weight: The thickness of the plates in plate-type heat exchangers is only 0.6–0.8 mm, while the thickness of the heat exchange tubes in shell-and-tube heat exchangers is 2.0–2.5 mm ; The shell of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is much heavier than the frame of a plate heat exchanger. To accomplish the same heat exchange task, a plate heat exchanger requires a smaller heat exchange area than a shell and tube heat exchanger. 4. Lower price for the same heat exchange area (compared to other types of heat exchangers at the same heat exchange area); given that the same materials are used, the production cost is necessarily lower than that of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, as less material is required for the frame. 5.
