The conditions of rural dirt roads are poor: they have steep slopes, sharp turns, narrow lanes, and are full of potholes. On sunny days, with the road surface dry, dust rises; once the fine dust is carried away, rocks and potholes appear on the road. On rainy days, when there is continuous precipitation, the soil becomes saturated; water accumulation, mud, and puddles can be seen everywhere on the roads, and it may even lead to the collapse of road shoulders. Under such conditions, driving on rural dirt roads is very difficult; it is necessary to understand the road conditions under various weather conditions and master the key principles in order to ensure driving safety. 1. Descend carefully: Whether it’s sunny or rainy, use medium to low gears when going downhill, reduce the throttle to descend slowly, and avoid letting the vehicle roll down in neutral. Due to the potholes and many rocks on the dirt roads, the conditions are complex; it is often necessary to apply the brakes to slow down while going downhill in order to avoid obstacles. Especially on some dirt roads that have sharp turns downhill, if the vehicle rolls down the slope in neutral, braking can easily cause the vehicle to drift, swing sideways, or even overturn, leading to serious accidents. 2. Choose the road surface When there are potholes or rocks on the road surface, it is necessary to take into account the vehicle’s ground clearance and steer carefully to avoid them. When passing through soft, muddy, or waterlogged areas, one should be particularly cautious; if necessary, get out of the vehicle first to observe the situation. Only after confirming that the wheels will not get stuck in the mud should one shift into a lower gear and drive through slowly. On newly built dirt roads, if there are tire tracks on the surface, one should try to drive along those tracks rather than taking reckless risks. 3. Preventing skidding When the front wheels start to skid, keep the throttle steady and correct the direction to get back under control. When the rear wheels skid, turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid, and then return to the road once the rear wheels are aligned properly. When the rear wheels start to skid on a downhill slope, gently press the accelerator to increase the speed; once the skidding stops, drive at the original speed. 4. Safe driving Do not follow the vehicle ahead too closely, to avoid having your vision obscured by dust raised by the vehicle in sunny weather or mud splashed up in rainy weather. When encountering oncoming traffic, pay attention to the road surface; especially after heavy rain, do not get too close to the roadside to avoid accidents caused by vehicle skidding. 5. Control vehicle speed There are many obstacles on dirt roads such as potholes and gravel, so the driving speed should not be too high; otherwise, the vehicle will vibrate more intensely, which not only causes damage to components such as the transmission and steering system but also poses a direct threat to driving safety. Especially when driving on roads with water accumulation and mud on rainy days, it is necessary to keep a steady grip on the accelerator. Control the vehicle speed by using medium and low gear shifts as well as emergency braking; even when reducing speed, it should be done by lowering the throttle.
