Things change a bit when the heat exchanger becomes larger, but overall it remains accurate. Generally, a U-type heat exchanger has only one end cap, with the material entering from the lower side of this end cap and exiting from the upper side, while the circulating water flows through the shell side; The tube sheet has two end caps, with fluid entering and exiting at the ends and circulating water in the middle
The slab shape is simply a square; with layers on top of each other, it’s the easiest to identify
Generally, shell-and-tube exchangers have two end caps, while U-shaped or floating-head exchangers have one end cap; plate-type exchangers are like plate and frame filter presses, and coiled-type exchangers are similar to coils.
