1. Distilled water: The most commonly used type of pure water in laboratories. Although the equipment is inexpensive, it is extremely energy-intensive and water-consuming, and its processing speed is slow; as a result, its use is gradually decreasing. Distilled water can remove most of the pollutants in tap water, but it cannot eliminate volatile impurities such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, silica, and certain organic substances. Fresh distilled water is sterile, but bacteria can easily multiply after storage. Furthermore, great care is also taken with the containers used for storage; if they are not inert materials, ions and the shaping substances in the containers can precipitate out, causing secondary pollution. 2. Deionized water: This is obtained by using ion exchange resins to remove anions and cations from water. It is a traditional method that has been in use for a long time to produce pure water. After treatment, ultra-pure water of a certain purity can be obtained; however, soluble organic substances still remain in the water, which can contaminate the ion exchange columns and reduce their efficiency. Additionally, deionized water is prone to bacterial growth when stored. The principle behind its generation is that water molecules, under pressure, pass through the reverse osmosis membrane to become pure water, while the impurities in the water are trapped by the membrane and removed. Reverse osmosis water overcomes many of the disadvantages of distilled water and deionized water; by using reverse osmosis technology, it is possible to effectively remove impurities such as dissolved salts, colloids, bacteria, viruses, bacterial endotoxins, and most organic substances from water. 3. Ultra-pure water: Its standard is a water resistivity of 18.2 MΩ-cm. The latest processes for producing ultrapure water involve reverse osmosis combined with ion exchange resins, or reverse osmosis combined with electrodeionization (EDI); the latter is more economical and environmentally friendly than the former.
