During today’s inspection, it was found that the newly added pipelines use copper tubes for steam tracing. The copper tubes are quite thin, and low-pressure steam flows through them. Using an infrared thermometer, I measured the temperature of these thin copper tubes at over 60 degrees; when touched by hand, the temperature was at least 90°C or higher. I would like to ask whether it is the special material of the copper tube or its thinness that causes inaccurate readings from the temperature gun
This post was last edited by altpage on 2016-7-1 at 10:03. How can one determine by hand that the temperature is in the 90s? What is the basis for this? You can tell it’s over 90 degrees just by touching it; so what’s the need for a thermometer?
At fifty or sixty degrees, people can’t tolerate it; so how do we know what it’s like at over 90 degrees?
What is the principle behind infrared thermometers, and how accurate are they? Go and take a look at the principle. The hand, the back of the hand or the palm? Has the hand become a standard?
Using touch to determine temperature results in significant errors. In my opinion, there is still a difference between infrared temperature measurement and that using plug-in thermistors; therefore, the temperature readings obtained via infrared methods cannot be relied on completely. It’s better to have reference values from plug-in or surface-mounted thermistors. Both infrared and surface-mounted sensors are highly affected by the surrounding environment. If there is a large difference between the temperature of the medium and the ambient temperature, and if proper insulation isn’t in place, the temperature will dissipate rapidly
It’s not possible to determine the temperature by touching it with your hand
If insulation is not used, the surface temperature loses a lot of heat, so infrared measurements only reflect the surface temperature, resulting in large errors.
Oh dear. I mean, why isn’t the thermometer accurate? My hand feels extremely hot when I touch it; I can’t even hold it there for a second. I don’t know exactly how high the temperature is, but it’s definitely higher than what the thermometer shows. I estimated it based on the temperature of the steam

Infrared thermometers are inaccurate for measuring the temperature of smooth metal surfaces; the instructions specify the requirements for such measurements.
