How to remove cadmium from solutions containing high levels of chloride ions

When high levels of chloride are present, it becomes difficult to displace cadmium even with zinc powder – is the effect of chloride ions on the complexation potential of cadmium that strong? The chloride concentration is about 40 g/L, with a pH of around 4.
I’m just starting to work with hydrometallurgy – shouldn’t part of the chlorine be removed first? I hope an expert will come and answer it
