Are you referring to mechanical seals in which silicon carbide is used as the friction pair? Silicon carbide itself is not sensitive to oil, but the auxiliary sealing rubber components are made of NBR; EPDM cannot come into contact with mineral oil
The sealing gap of the carbon ring is too small; it’s best to avoid using oil, as oil can cause coking and wear on the carbon ring, thereby increasing leakage.
Carbon ring seals must never be filled with oil; we used oil on it for the first time and it started smoking, which really scared everyone. Fill it with a bit of nitrogen.
I suddenly thought of carbon molecular sieves. If oil gets into them, they get poisoned and become unusable. So what happens if oil gets into your carbon ring seals? Can it still be used? Besides, it seems to have self-lubricating properties.
