Our facility has many water-using devices, including some water-cooled cabinets. One line requires around 200 cubic meters of water per day. There have been one or two instances when the water pumps stopped working, and the backup pumps could not be started either, resulting in production halts. Therefore, the management has requested that tap water be used temporarily for cooling purposes. My idea is to use tap water for cooling, but that would require laying new pipes and consume a large amount of water, so it’s not suitable. What do you all think? Are there any other institutional, managerial, or technical measures that can ensure the proper operation of the pump with a backup unit, thereby preventing production interruptions due to pump problems? This problem is not difficult to solve; a simple interlock control system with alarms will suffice. Typically, the outlet pressure of the circulating cooling water remains stable at a certain value; once it drops below this value, the backup pump can start automatically, and an alarm signal (beep or light) is generated to facilitate inspection and maintenance. If necessary, the tap water valve can also be equipped with an automatic valve for pressure control, with the control pressure set at a lower level; should the backup pump fail to start as well, the tap water valve will open automatically and an alarm will be triggered. That’s double insurance!
The two pumps serve as backups for each other; it’s not possible to use only one of them at all times, as the one that remains idle goes unattended…

Having one in use and one as a backup means that both are always in operation simultaneously, just like in shift duty – rotating usage is the correct way to handle this setup. A supply of tap water or a water tank at a higher level is essential for the system.
The two water pumps can operate simultaneously... Switch between them; don’t use one pump continuously while leaving the other unused. Automatic switching can be programmed into the control system, and the switching cycle can be set freely according to the pump load.
